MISSION: Sweet Satisfaction for Students

I often think about students. Since I work at a university, and I'm a former graduate student, my world is mostly made up of students, academics, studying, and, of course, stress. I love Affiliated Agents M and S of Virginia for thinking of their fellow students and how kindness might brighten their day and help east their stress.

Let's hear about their first mission!

Hi there,

We were finally able to find time to go out on a mission. We were so excited! Since we love Halloween around here, we wanted to extend the holiday a little bit. We decided to make up a sweet treat and leave it in the library of the nearby university. Our hope is that some overtired student might find it during a long night of studying!

We put the package together in the office - lots of candy and a note  assuring the recipient that this package is for him/her :). 

And then we  marched over to the library to find the perfect spot to leave the gift.  It was hard to find a place! The library was so busy and packed with  students. But we found the perfect spot on the third floor on one of the  bookshelves.

We had so much fun putting this little mission together and actually doing it. We can't wait to do it again!

Affiliated Agents M and S, you rock! Thanks for thinking of the hard-working students in your community. And, I couldn't help but notice, thanks for using Pittsburgh Steelers colors in your package! :)

MISSION: Secret Agent L Strikes Again

It's been what seems like forever since I've completed a mission. I've been so busy keeping up with the administrative side of this project--answering emails, posting missions completed by my amazing Affiliated Agents, etc.--as well as trying to keep up with my day job, that I haven't really been able to make the time to go be Secret Agent L!

But yesterday was World Kindness Day, and I was determined not to let the day go by without participating in an act of kindness...secret agent-style, of course.

Location: Hillman Library benches; University of Pittsburgh; Pittsburgh, PA

Time: 4:18 p.m.

My mission was simple: gather up some little gifts and leave them for someone to find on World Kindness Day.  Those little gifts included:

A pre-stamped thank-you post card, ready for the finder to use to say thanks to someone in his or her life...

...and a pad of kindness Post-Its {because we always need them, right?}, a Be Kind No Exceptions magnet, and a $5 Starbucks gift card.

I jotted down a little note for the finder, so that he or she would understand why I left my gifts and what they were.

I packaged it all together with a pretty bow...

...headed on over to the Oakland neighborhood, where the University of Pittsburgh and its library are...

...found a bench outside, and placed my little gesture of kindness on it for someone to find.

Happy World Kindness Day, everyone. But shouldn't every day be filled with kindness?

MISSION: Middle School Magic

I remember middle school as being a time of turmoil for me. I'd moved around a lot due to my dad's job in the steel industry, and my middle school years were split between two states--which meant, two separate schools and two separate attempts at making friends and finding my place. To top it off, I was really tall for my age and very lanky. Needless to say, I got made fun of daily.

Scratch that. Hourly.

How I would have loved to stumble upon one of Secret Agent Eagle's acts of kindness! I imagine I would have cried less tears during my middle school years. Thank you, Secret Agent Eagle, for your kindness, especially in the often tumultuous world of All Things Middle School.

Secret Agent Eagle tells us about her first mission:

As a staff, we had been discussing ways to improve the school climate and I thought starting a Secret Agent project would be perfect.  Wednesday was the beginning of the new grading quarter at school and seemed to be the right time to carry out this mission.  I found Quotable magnets at the Market District in Robinson- two that could be geared towards a student and one for a teacher.  I also purchased simple blank note cards for the packaging.

I chose the name "Secret Agent Eagle" because our school's mascot is the eagle.  As you can hopefully see on the cards, I tried to write positive, uplifting messages that would hopefully brighten up someone's day.  I inserted a Quotable magnet, attached the SAL business card (not shown), and headed to school to find places to leave them.

As I'm sure you can imagine, there are always kids in the halls, so I wasn't able to get a picture of my drop points- I almost got caught! I left the teacher note in a faculty restroom near the main lobby. I then placed one of the student notes in a restroom on the third floor and the other was left on a windowsill between the first and second floors. I haven't heard anything about them being found, but I'm hoping to continue doing more missions and possibly getting other Secret Agent Eagles involved!

MISSION: Triple the Kindness

September 17 is a special day. It's my dad's birthday. My dad is one of the greatest loves of my life, so September 17 is a day I like to celebrate. It's also the day that Affiliated Agent K of San Francisco decided to complete three missions of kindness.

It's like she knew it was my dad's birthday.

I love butterflies; I think they’re beautiful and cheery little fellows.  I collect anything and everything with butterflies.  So I knew whatever I decided to do for my first mission, butterflies had to be a part of it.  Awhile back, I had found these adorable butterfly print gift bags that had matching note cards, and I knew they would be perfect for this. 

The hardest part, for me, was deciding on what to put in the gift bag.  I am not a very artistic/creative type person at all, so I decided to think about things that brighten my day or inspire me.  Other than butterflies, I’m a big quote lover, so I was completely stoked when I came across these little pads called InspireNotes. 

These little note pads are not only eco-friendly and practical, but they have these great little quotes on them too.  I wasn’t completely sure what to write in the card, but I decided on a quote by Scott Adams which I hope inspires the receiver to continue my ripple.  I also incorporated two of the quotes from the pad, these two quotes are to remind the receiver that the world is filled with beauty and that you have to savor life’s moments…two things which are easy to forget in this frenzied, go-go world. 

So I put together everything and had three little bags ready to go.  I decided that September 17th was going to be my mission day.

Today was a perfect mission day; I had to drive my boss to a car rental agency to pick-up a car. It was a two hour adventure to drive 11 miles, pick up a car, and drive 11 miles back to work. The line was long and everyone was cranky, so I decided to leave one of the three bags somewhere around this car rental place. It was almost 1pm as we walked to the parking garage; I noticed a bench, so I quickly placed the bag on the bench, snapped a quick picture and continued on my way. My boss was like, “What did you just do?” And I said, “I left a gift.” No explanation was asked for or given; it was great the way she just rolled with it.

I left the second bag in my doctor’s waiting room; I thought it could cheer someone up, no one really likes going to the doctors.   However, I left the bag at 4pm (on a Friday) and when I left the office at 5pm it was still there…so I wonder if anyone found it. 

My third bag couldn’t have been placed better.  I was at Castro and 17th Street. There’s a bench right outside of a pizza place. I sat down and waited for a calm moment (it was 5pm and people were getting off of work).  A bus came, red lights hit, the sidewalk cleared, so I quickly stood, snapped a picture and walked away.  I walked a couple of businesses up the street to where the bus stop was and waited for my bus, I saw an older woman go and sit at the bench opposite of the one I had been at (there are two benches flanking the door to the pizza place).   A bunch of people were walking by, the woman was sitting at the second bench and nobody made a play for this bright, colorful gift bag.  Finally a bus came, two tourist women got off and walked toward my bench, they looked at the bag, chatted with the older woman and gave her the bag and walked away.  The older woman was sitting with her back to me, so I have no idea what happened next, I just hopped on my bus and came home. 

It was exciting to plan and implement but I realized I’d never make a great real-life Secret Agent.   I has fun and I hope that every time they use this little pad, they remember the day they got it and it brings a smile to their face.

Agents acquired $5 gift card, which was left on the changing table in the family restroom. To remain covert, Mini Agent AS, currently "potty training" as part of her cover, needed to use the restroom. Photographic evidence of the completed mission is attached (all evidence of Mini Agent AS's cover have been destroyed). I am pleased to report Mini Agents followed protocol and did not release top secret information to civilians and we left the scene unnoticed.

Mini Agent HS decided future missions will be to leave a $20 gift card in someone's mailbox and to buy a Hot Wheels car and tracks. Affiliate Agent DS will take these missions into consideration and report future activity.

MISSION: Cold Weather Caring

I hate being cold. I mean, I really, really hate it. And I'm always cold. When it's 70 degrees out, I'm like, "Where's my parka?" No joke. I also have my space heater in my living room turned up to 94 degrees most winter days.

Yes. 94 degrees.

But I love Pittsburgh with all my heart, so I "take one for the team" and freeze my little bum off many months out of the year in order to stay here. So when a fellow Pittsburgher and Affiliated Agent decided to do a mission of warmth yesterday, I knew I had to post it immediately. It warmed me up just reading about it!

Even though she was sick, Affiliated Agent T totally came through! Now THAT'S kindness!

It is hard to believe it is November already, and it is time for winter coats and gloves.  As I put my winter coat on the other day, I thought of all the times I was caught on a cold day, without any gloves, and my poor hands froze.  Suddenly, I was inspired to create a wintery mission!

I bought some gloves and earwarmers, two earwarmer glove sets, and then 2 matching pairs of gloves.  I decided to make cards to go with the sets that had a wintery message.  Each card was different, and contained a lovely snow related quote along with my personal message of kindness.  I attached a card and Secret Agent L business card to each set.

Then, I went to a local shopping plaza, and located 3 cars to put the gifts on.  Even though it was dark, I almost got caught by a shopper, so I took the pictures as quickly as possible, and left.

I hope that these people will be able to warm their hands, and that the kindness warmed their hearts!

I had been sick all day, and decided that doing something kind might make me feel better.  It totally did!

Had my very first missions today! For some reason it was hard to choose my gifts, but I finally put them together yesterday and wrote the cards.

Mission #1: At the little laundromat I’ve used over the years I left a package containing quarters for a drink from the vending machine, a word puzzle book and a bright pink mechanical pencil. I tried to leave it all day Sunday, but the place was way too busy so I got up early this morning and got there just after the owners unlocked it and left so I was able to take my photo!

There happens to be a webcam pointed down that street and I saw quite a few cars pull in this morning so I’m pretty sure it’s been found by now. Yea!

Mission #2: A quiet little park where people like to exercise, walk their dogs and bring the kids. I also see a lot of people sitting by themselves eating lunch so I knew where I wanted to leave it. On a bench by the gate where it wouldn’t be noticed when you came in, but you would see it as you walked over to throw your trash away.

I wrapped a little notebook, pencil, quarters and a yoyo!

Got there about 7am, but there were dog walkers out so I had to stall and pretend to read a book until I got a few minutes where no one was around that area to set it up and snap the photo. I couldn’t stand the suspense so I drove back at lunch and it was gone! I checked the trash can for ribbons or wrappings but they took everything, which is really cool.

I missed the notice about the Quote mission, but now I’m hooked in on Twitter and Facebook so I won’t be AWOL next time. My job can be quite stressful and this is a wonderful way to relax, thanks Laura!

Hello SAL,

I completed my first mission on Friday, man was it fun!

I happened to have 2 extra tickets to Hershey Park and decided they would be the perfect little something for my first mission.

I got everything prepared and ready on Friday morning and decided I would leave it in the ladies room of my local Target. I was taking my son to a school event and dropped in Target first. It was about 4:20pm on Friday the 24th, in Maryland.

I went into the Target bathroom and hung out in a stall while it emptied out, once empty I made my move. I put it on top of the paper towel dispenser quickly took my pictures and hurried out.

This was SO exciting and can not wait to do more!!

MISSION: On a Mission with Mr. Rogers

I have a special place in my heart for Mr. Rogers. Why? Well, there are two reasons. The first is that he's from Pittsburgh. {Holla!} I know, right?! So much awesomeness comes from Pittsburgh. The second reason is because I hugged the television one day when he was on, and I pulled it right down on top of me. My mother insists that it was my brother to whom this happened, but I remember it vividly. I was so fond of Mr. Rogers. So much so that I wanted to hug him right out of the TV set.

Mr. Rogers has another fan. Affiliated Agent HM of Sterling, Virginia, to be precise. And he went along with her on her most recent mission. What a wonderful companion to have!

This was my second real mission and I have to say that I was considerably less nervous this time around.  When I saw this book, I thought that it would be perfect for a mission.  It's just a little something to make someone smile and remind them that they are special.  We all need that every once in a while.  

I decided that the library would be the perfect place for the drop, so after lunch my daughter and I set out to (hopefully) brighten someone's day and pick up a few books while we were at it.  

It was pretty busy when we got there, so it took a minute to find a place to leave the package where there wouldn't be any witnesses.

The teen section was mostly abandoned, so I decided to stealthily (but not really) leave the card and min-book at a table in that section.  

I hope it brightened someone's day, because really, we're never too old for words of wisdom from Mr. Rogers.

Affiliated Agent HM, you are so right. We are never too old for the words of wisdom (and love and kindness) from our dear friend, Mr. Rogers. I'm sure he's smiling down on you from heaven.

NEW MISSION: Young Women Working for Kindness

I'm always so happy when I get emails from people who want to become Affiliated Agents. I'm especially happy when I hear that our young people want to get involved. It's never too early to start learning about, teaching, and engaging in kindness.

When Affiliated Agent H of Charlotte, North Carolina, informed me that she wanted to get the young women of her youth group involved, I knew they'd do an excellent job! And when I got their mission specifics, I was right! They outdid themselves!

For our weekly church youth group activity, our girls (ages 12-18) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints took on making someone smile at the South Park Mall.  We placed things on car windshields, on the train table and on the shelf at the local bookstore, in the bathrooms and at drinking fountains.  We hid packs of gum in soda dispensers and left treats behind on the comfy chairs.  Our favorite drop spot was in the  basket of a pizza delivery bike.

We all had a great night completing our missions here in Charlotte, North Carolina and can't wait to do it again.  Thanks for letting us in on the fun!!

I just got back from my first mission!  You wouldn't believe how much fun it was!  I decided that I wanted my first mission to involve animals somehow, so I thought what better way than to give someone with a dog a dog toy!  I know how happy I am when my furkids are happy, so this is a day-brightening-two-fer!  BONUS!

Tonight (8/18/10) at 11PM, after driving around for about an hour, I finally found my target.  I had decided that I would drop my little gift of a squeaky, jingly, rubbery, awesomey doggie chew toy and cute card (wrapped up all pretty-like) on the first car I saw with a doggie bumper sticker on the back. 

After not finding an appropriate drop spot for a while, I decided to pull into the parking lot at a local hospital. And wouldn't you know it, I found my target!  And I think it's a doctor too, based on the parking spot. 

I can't think of a more deserving candidate!   They work so hard and their families (and pets) have to sacrifice so much time for them to do all the work they do.  Plus, this particular hospital is a teaching hospital so there's a very good chance that this was a medical student and gracious knows how busy they are!

I have had a really stressful week at work but this mission really helped me to get my head back in the right spot.  You're really right when you say how healing helping can be!  I can't wait for my next mission and oh, the ideas I have.  :D

MISSION: Flash Mob of Kindness and Day Brightening

A good flash mob.

My incredible Number Two organized this awesome flash mob today that took place at noon in Pittsburgh's Market Square. With the help and kindness of the Point Park University Conservatory of Dance's extremely talented (and darling!) dancers, some happy sunflowers complete with Secret Agent L business cards attached to them, and some fun music, we managed to give cold, dreary Pittsburgh something to feel warm and sunny about during the lunch hour.

I have a sweet tooth. And not just any sweet tooth. A serious, professional, I-should-get-paid-to-eat-as-much-sugar-as-I-do sweet tooth. It's amazing that my teeth haven't rotted out of my head. But it explains why I have an arsenal of tooth-cleaning supplies at my apartment.

For the very reason I love treats, I love this mission from Affiliated Agent A in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It's just plain sweet.

Let's see how Affiliated Agent A's first mission went!

I spend a lot of time at the University of Arkansas so many of my missions will probably be on campus.  I won’t say whether I work there, teach there, am a student there, or just really LOVE the Razorbacks.   I wanted to leave someone a little treat on his/her vehicle and since it was rainy and overcast in Fayetteville, the garage seemed like a perfect place.  Also this garage is where I park when I am running late in the morning (that’s been happening a lot recently for me).  And since this was my first mission, I thought the garage would be a good place to be covert and to gain confidence. 

I was armed with a card, a package of Baskin Robbins hard candy and a box of Cracker Jacks.  

At first I intended to leave this on a car parked close to mine, but there was someone nearby who got into a vehicle and just sat for awhile.  I stalled as long as I could, slowly placing one-by-one my umbrella, lunch bag and attaché into my car, hoping that the person would leave soon.  I decided to drive around the garage and find another car.  I drove up one level and parked in between two cars at the far end of the garage - a later model BMW and an older Toyota just like mine except a different color!   The Toyota had to be the one.  There was not a university sticker on the car so I wasn’t sure if it was a staff member, faculty member or a student.  It probably was a visitor.  There wasn’t anyone around.  I placed everything on the front windshield and snapped a few pictures.  

This was so much fun.  I can't wait to do another one soon!

MISSION: Merry Matrimony

I'm heading to a wedding out of town next weekend, so I thought it'd be perfect to post Affiliated Agent V's mission in the spirit of my upcoming trip. Even though I'm not married or engaged, I've known enough brides and brides-to-be to know that wedding planning can be a pretty stressful time! Affiliated Agent V of Indiana came up with a really thoughtful way to help a bride-to-be de-stress herself and keep things in perspective as she prepares for the big day!

Affiliated Agent V tells us about her first mission:

I completed my first "mission" this weekend. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I was going to do and what type of person I wanted to target. In between getting ready for my bridal shower, checking my bridal checklist, and paying wedding vendors, I realized that so much of my free time right now is taken up with wedding plans. Then I realized that a large portion of the stress in my life right now is also because of the wedding planning, so I thought "Why not do something special for a fellow bride?" That's when it all came to me... I went to Target and got a $5 gift card, because who doesn't like Target? Then I decided that I would pass on a book that was given to me, "Chicken Soup for the Bride's Soul". Once I gathered everything I needed, I set to writing a little note to go with my gift and figuring out a place to leave it.

After my little RAK was ready, I thought long and hard about where to  leave it. I realized the perfect place to put it was the bridal aisle at  my local JoAnn Fabrics. Originally I planned to put it behind a box of  invitations, but as I scoped out the aisle, there was a couple looking  at invitations and programs. Since it didn't look like they were going  to leave anytime soon I decided to be sneaky and place the book at the  other end of the aisle while they were looking the other direction. I  found the perfect place on a shelf just under the main display area,  next to flower girl baskets and ring bearer pillow.

I hope it brought a smile, a laugh, or even just a little bit of stress relief for a bride like me.

Affiliated Agent V, I LOVE this mission! Your thoughtfulness is so beautiful, and your words are so kind. I'm sure that the woman who found this smiled for the rest of the day! Thank you!

MISSION: Beacon of Light

I've been going through some stuff in my life lately that's been rather difficult. Some of those things have been resolved, and today I finally started to feel the positive effects from that resolve. Just earlier today, I sent an email to someone telling him that I felt light. And when I was going through my inbox a little bit ago to decide which mission to post, I came across this sweet one from Affiliated Agent M in Atlanta, and I knew it was totally appropriate for today! We should all be so blessed to feel light and to share our light with others.

I was so excited to become an affiliated agent that I could not wait to get that first mission under my belt.  I was on my way out of town for a long, fun weekend and I was feeling light, so I wanted to share that with someone else.  So, I bought a little LED flashlight and took it to a local community center.  

Because there were so many people around I left it in the women's bathroom so that I could be sure no one would see me and so I could be sure that it would be found at random.

Affiliated Agent M, I LOVE this mission. Your witty play on words is so sweet, and these little flashlights really do come in handy!

MISSION: Make the Earth Better

When I was growing up, I was convinced that I would single-handedly save the planet. I had dolphin photos all over my room, a Greenpeace calendar every single year (from Santa, of course), and I always made sure I cut up those plastic soda rings into millions of little pieces. I even went so far as to paint a giant earth on my bedroom closet's white door, much to the shock of my parents.

I was a serious tree-hugger.

I still am, to some extent, because I love this planet and the creatures on it. I'm a vegetarian, I recycle like crazy, and I use my reusable shopping bags for everything.

Speaking of reusable shopping bags, Affiliated Agent M of Enfield, Connecticut, completed her first mission recently, which involved, of course, kindness..AND homemade love!

Hi Laura!

I am soooo excited to finally be writing to you about my mission. When I first signed on, I had lots of ideas swimming in my head (I hope to use all of them over time) but I wanted my first one to really be a piece of me. I am a very environmentally conscious person and try daily to make a difference for the planet when I can, i.e. recycling, shutting off the water, using a water filter and especially reusable bags! I try to always have one in my purse and at the ready.

That being said, I decided to try and make my own bags from random fabric. I took an idea from a gift my sister gave me and ran with it. It is a reusable bag that folds up into a little pouch with a loop to fit on a keyring. I can't tell you how handy it is~especially at the drugstore when picking up just a few things. So I whipped out my little Shark sewing machine, with no real sewing experience to speak of and got busy. I spent a rainy Friday evening watching movies and made six different bags! I was so excited, but still unsure about the actual mission itself. I wanted the first place to be really random, but still in a place where someone might readily be able to use it too.

Then it hit me! I needed to return my library book and the movies I had watched to the Enfield Library in Enfield, CT. The best part, they have a book drop that you can drive up to after hours. It was perfect! I wrote up a card about the bag/mission using a beautiful original notecard paitend by my best friend Marla. Then I enclosed a Secret Agent L card and sealed the envelope. Because I was leaving it outside on a cool, autumn New England evening, I put it in a ziplock freezer back for protection. I grabbed my keys, camera and industrial packing tape and hit the road at 9:25 PM on Thursday Ocotber 21, 2010.

It was so exciting to be performing my first mission and it was even more so because it was night time and I felt so "Secret Agent-y". I pulled into the library and made sure there were no cars in the parking lot. The last thing I wanted was to be caught my first time out. I taped the bag to the outside of the bin with the note in plain sight and took a few quick pictures. As I pulled out of the parking lot, I felt absolutely giddy! Now I am even more excited to strategically place the remaining 5 bags. I think I may bring one to NH this weekend when we go to visit my daughter for her college's parents' weekend!

Laura, thank you again for the inspiration, and I promise this is only the beginning for me!

BUT!

I'm so excited to post today's mission because...well...I participated in it! I didn't complete the mission alone. In fact, I was merely there for photo-taking and moral support. I accompanied new Affiliated Agent MB on her very first mission. I prepped it, but she carried it out. Way to go, Affiliated Agent MB!

If I may, I'll provide the narrative for today's double-agent mission.

It was a long day, no doubt.  Filing papers, answering phone calls, processing paperwork, answering emails, putting out fires...our work in our department is never done.  On my way out for the day, I mentioned to my colleague that I'd planned on doing a mission.  She was very interested in what I planned on doing, but I was so tired, that I hadn't really thought that far in advance.  I had the gift in my bag; that was as far as I'd gotten.

I'd wanted to complete this mission over a week ago, during Mental Health Awareness Week.  But, as it is known for doing, life got all crazy and messy.  And the mission never happened.  But, better late than never, right?  So I suggested to Affiliated Agent MB that she carry out this mission, regardless of its lateness.  She got SO excited.  

Thus began our tandem effort of kindness.

My accomplice and I aren't involved in the science side of academia.  We're Liberal Arts people.  But we know how hard students work to study the sciences.  We know the demands and sacrifices that faculty members and staff members have endured and made to be where they are.  My Affiliated Agent decided that we should target them for our mission.  I agreed.

We headed out of our building at the end of the work day and made our way across campus to the science building.

We made our way inside, trying to determine the best location for The Drop. The first floor lecture hall was filled with students, so we went to the second floor--the Biological Sciences Department.

We scouted the area for a few minutes, hoping to find the perfect place.  Affiliated Agent MB turned the corner and spotted this lovely little lounge area.  

Rumor has it that a pretty big Chemistry exam is coming up tomorrow.  I imagine that some of the people in the Biology Department are also in Chemistry.  And chances are, they'll be taking that monster exam.  

Affiliated Agent MB knew right away that this was The Spot. She picked a chair and put the gift on it. (And, yes, she squealed with delight from the excitement of it all.)

And she said she felt so good afterward.  Yes!  Mission accomplished!

MISSION: Men are Marvelous

First, THANK YOU everyone for being so patient after my website crashed yesterday. That was so frustrating! But I want to publicly thank two of my most favorite men in the world, Norm (@mrdirby) and Andy (@techburgh) for working their magic and getting me back online.

Speaking of wonderful men, I'm always so excited when I get a mission from a male Affiliated Agent. I love that men are stepping up and showing their more caring, softer sides. And when both women AND men are out there sharing kindness with the world, the world has that much more of a chance to heal. Don't you agree?

Affiliated Agent C of Pittsburgh (yay!), who also happens to be a friend of mine, completed his first mission recently. And I'm proud of him. Well done, friend.

Let's hear about his very first mission!

Truth be told, I struggled as to how to carry out this mission. Reading the previous mission reports, I wanted to do something different, but eventually realized that if I didn't start, I'd be just over-thinking things, knowing that I just had to go out there and see what happens. So I did this past Saturday night.

Inspired by a tweet SAL sent earlier in the week, I used a quote as a springboard for the mission. Truth be told, part of the reason I had trouble doing missions were how to present them while striking the right tone. I honestly don't know if I accomplished this, but I gave it my best shot.

When I arrived at the target location, I went into the store, and went straight to the Seattle's Best Coffee store. After inquiring, I learned that they did not give out gift cards for SBC, so I pulled out $5 from my pocket and placed it in the prepared card.

Seeing that a quote was supposed to be the theme, I felt that the quote should stand alone with no explanation.

With the standard SAL card inserted into the card and envelop along with the money, I handed it over to the waitress minding the register, handed over the envelope, with instructions to give the card to the next customer. I know that you usually ask for us to photograph where any materials are left at the target location, but in this specific case, I felt that discretion was the better part of valor.

Again, I hope I did this right, seeing that this was my first mission as an Agent. If not, I hp to do better in the future.

Affiliated Agent C, you absolutely did this right! I love the little added touch of handing it to the cashier and giving instructions to give it to the next person. Keep that kindness coming!

MISSION: Dino-mite Kindness!

Dinosaurs. They're pretty awesome. We've got loads of dinosaurs all over the place here in Pittsburgh. There's Dippy (she's adorable), and Creation Rex (personal friend of mine), a T-Rex dressed up as Mr. Rogers, and a host of others scattered here and there in statuesque form all over our beautiful 'Burgh.

Needless to say, when Affiliated Agent M from Portland, Maine, sent me his mission, I knew I had to post it pronto.

Affiliated Agent M tells us of his first dinosaur-ific mission:

Well, it took me a while to do this. But, once I finally took the initiative – what a blast!

This task has been shuffled around my calendar on a daily basis. But finally, my inspiration came when I happened to be in an art supply store. As I was checking out, on the counter were these tiny rubber figurines, everything from gorillas, to dragons, to babies. Spinning the display, I saw one of my childhood favorites – a Tyrannosaurus Rex! The figurines are barely an inch tall, so this little guy had the perfect mix of snarling ferocity mixed with a bright, happy green color. I bought five.

My plan was simple. I would bring them to work and covertly prop them on random people’s desks to add a dose of mysterious fun in their day. Throughout Monday and Tuesday I placed the figures on keyboards, monitors, and desks, along with a Secret Agent card and message. As part of my profession write a fair amount, so I misspelled part of the message to avoid being busted by my peers.

The results are coming back as I write. The whole office is abuzz with trying to figure out who left these rogue dinosaurs on people’s desks! People are laughing and the theories are flying around.

This was a lot of fun. I forget how good something like this can make me feel. I’m looking forward to doing more!

Okay, seriously--this is one of my most favorite missions EVER. Clever, fun, and kind. A trifecta of awesomeness!

MISSION: Notes of Niceness

I'm a girl who loves words. I love words so much that I decided to put myself through the tortures of graduate school to study them. Quotes? I've got books full of them. I have them jotted down on pieces of scrap paper all over the place. I have them on Post-Its stuck around my desk. And Quotable Cards? Well, let's just say we're in a long-term relationship.

Iowa Affiliated Agent L loves them, too. She completed her first mission using them. I particularly love this mission because Affiliated Agent L chose quotes that are uplifting, and seeing that this week is National Mental Health Awareness Week, it seems a perfectly fitting mission. Sometimes, when depression or anxiety find their way into our lives, it can be a word or two of encouragement and love that helps us get through it. Well done, Affiliated Agent L.

Let's hear about her first mission!

I am so excited to have completed my first mission!  Let me tell you, it was quite an exhilarating experience. I had no idea how much of an adrenaline rush it would be!

I was in a discount store one night looking for a card of encouragement for a friend of mine who is struggling right now when I came across the perfect little "pick-me-ups" for my first official mission.  I was hoping these cheery sayings would be just the perfect thing to brighten someone's day.

I picked up enough "happy thoughts" cards for each of them...

...and found some happiness quotes to write inside the cards.

"Some picture happiness; others create it." Author Unknown

My goal with this mission was simply to bring a smile to someone's face and put a little extra spring in their step for the day.  Just getting the stuff together was enough to make me smile!

Since I had several packages ready for this mission, I enlisted both my mom and sister-in-law to help me make these drops in

different locations.  Unfortunately I don't have pictures of their drop locations, but my mom chose to put hers in the restroom at her church.  My sister-in-law works at the university and chose to place hers somewhere on campus.  I know it made me happy just to watch the two of them walk out of my house with the packages in their purses!

My heart was pounding as I was driving around deciding on my first location which was a bus stop in town.  It took me several minutes to find an unoccupied bus stop without people milling around.

Just when I thought I had made it in and out quick enough to make the drop and snap a fast picture, I turned around to see a man sitting in his truck across the street looking at me through binoculars!  I just started giggling and hoped that he wasn't taking down my license plates and calling the police as I walked

back to my getaway vehicle :)

My next drop location was a park bench around a lake area where many people go to exercise, walk their dogs, and kayak or fish.  It was such a gorgeous night with many people out, but this drop was much easier as people seemed to be preoccupied with what they were doing.  I casually sat on a bench and gazed at the lake for awhile wondering who might be the one to find this and snuck away when no one was too close by.

My final drop was inside a tailgating tent in the university parking lot. I figured one of the students who park in that lot or someone setting up for a tailgate before this weekend's football game would have a nice little surprise.

The sheer joy this first mission brought to me was amazing. I can't wait to continue spreading random acts of kindness!

Mini MISSION: Love at LuLu's Noodles

Here in Pittsburgh there's a really popular Chinese restaurant called LuLu's Noodles. If you're from Pittsburgh, you know about this place. It's right in the heart of Oakland, near the University of Pittsburgh's campus.

I received the following email today from a fellow Pittsburgher, and it made my heart smile:

Today, I went to Lulu's Noodles in Oakland to pick up my lunch order. There was a man sitting on the stoop just outside of the restaurant,asking people for spare change so that he could buy something to eat. I said, "Sorry." He said, "Maybe on your way back out?"

Upon entering the restaurant, I went to the register and asked if I could add something to my order. I picked something from the menu for him and paid. While waiting for the order to be ready, a woman behind the counter asked me, "Are you buying food for that guy out there?" I said, "Yes." She said, "Oh. Just so you know, there are about ten people buying food for him right now."

I was stunned! So many kind people at Lulu's today! :)

A lot of people are hesitant to help people on the street. We often think they just want money for drugs or alcohol. But the truth is, we don't always know what they need, nor can we assume we do. I am so proud of my fellow Pittsburghers who decided to take this man's request seriously and extend kindness to him by purchasing him some food.

When we start seeing people as unique, un-repeatable individuals, it's amazing the opportunities for kindness and love that will surface.

MISSION: Kindness for the Cure

I've mentioned on more than one or two occasions here my own experience with a near breast cancer scare. October is a very special month to me for just that reason. When I think about the fact that I was diagnosed with an atypical papilloma at the age of 28, when I think about the fact that I've already had about 10 mammograms in my life (and I'm only 32), when I think about the fact that I have an oncologist who watches me like a hawk, and when I think about the fact that I'm now 5 times more likely to develop breast cancer in my lifetime, I want to scream out to every woman to let her know that she is unrepeatable, amazing, beautiful, precious, and loved-and that I want her to take care of herself.

This month, I encourage all of my Affiliated Agents to complete missions that center around Breast Cancer Awareness. We WILL beat this disease. I don't know when, and I don't know how, but we will.

Affiliated Agent T tells us about her first--and very special--mission:

This was my first attempt at a mission.  I really wanted to do something that was not only kind, but had a real purpose.  October presented the perfect opportunity, since it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I decided to go a little goodie bag of some products that would help raise awareness and support, while being practical.  A bonus was a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the items went to breast cancer research organizations.  Since pink is the color symbolic of breast cancer awareness and breast cancer survivors, I decided to bundle it all together in a pink bag, and write a note to go along with the bag.  The bag would contain a water bottle, a journal, and an awareness bracelet, along with the note.

I wanted the note to stress to the person finding it that she or he (because breast cancer affects us all) was important, and loved, and that it was important to take care of one’s self, as well as to encourage all the women we love to do self exams and get mammograms.  I wrote it on some paper with a pretty breast cancer awareness image on it, and sealed it up in an envelope.  I taped the envelope to the front of the bag, and then taped the bag closed.

The hardest part of the mission was deciding where to leave the bag. I wanted to do it somewhere in my area, but not in my town. Hubby and I were attending an event, and on our way, we stopped to grab a bite to eat at Sonic. I realized that this was the perfect place to leave my package. The weather was a little rainy, and the little car bays at Sonic, where you pull in for curb side service, are under an awning, so it would be protected. We hung the bag off of the little area where you order your food, so someone was sure to see it.

I hope that someone not only enjoyed the little surprise, but also saw the opportunity to help continue spreading breast cancer awareness.  Together, we will find a cure!

This is my first assignment for HQ.

First of all I've made it a decision to perform my missions on Mondays because it gives me something to look forward to and well, let's face it - most of us need a pick-me-up on a Monday!

I have a garden that is bursting with flowers. I made a small bouquet out of phlox, black eyed susan, shasta daisy and thyme. Everything was wrapped up and the personal note "I hope you have the 'thyme' to enjoy this gift!" and the business card were hole punched and attached. (I wanted to include a play on words with 'thyme' because not everyone can identify culinary herbs.

Cruising around my normal coffee stop in the morning, I couldn't find a place that wasn't near observing people. I didn't want anyone to cause a fuss thinking that I was breaking into someone's vehicle so I drove to the far end of the lot and found a red SUV sitting in the middle like a cherry on a plate. The bouquet was tucked into the right corner between the hood and windshield curve (I'm petite and reaching for the windshield wipers was a bit awkward for me when I was in Secret Agent mode. I'll get more suave as I practice.)

And yes, I was humming the Mission Impossible soundtrack as I jumped in and out of my car to make the drop!

MISSION: Ready for Kindness in Radiology

One of the things I've noticed about some of the missions that have been completed by my Affiliated Agents is that the more personal they are, the stronger they seem to affect people--recipients, AAs, and followers of the project alike. It is because of these personal missions that I am encouraged to be even braver in my own missions.

Affiliated Agent C took a very personal situation and used it to reach out in kindness to someone else. Her bravery and awareness of others is inspiring.

Location: West Penn Hospital; Radiology Department Ladies' Dressing Room; Pittsburgh, PA

Time: 10:15 a.m.

On Tuesday I headed to West Penn Hospital to have some tests done. 

Knowing firsthand how stressful diagnostic testing can be I thought this would be the perfect place to do a mission.  I needed to be there for 3 hours so tucked in my tote bag with a good book and some snacks was my first mission.  I was so excited!

After registering I went to the women’s dressing room to change into the very lovely hospital gown.  The dressing room has two small rooms each with a curtain. The gowns are kept in a bench/seat in each dressing room so I closed my curtain, pulled my gown out, and placed my card inside for the next person who would be changing in there. 

I wanted to get a picture of the dressing room but there were two other ladies waiting to change.  So I quickly went out to the waiting room to wait for my test. 

I hope whoever found it smiled and a little bit of the stress went away.  I know it made me feel good to spread some kindness. 

Affiliated Agent C, I'm sure your act of kindness helped. Diagnostic testing is never fun. It's filled with so much worry and stress. I bet the woman who found your gift felt like she'd received a hug, too. Thank you for reaching out!

MISSION: NAMI Walk and Kindness Exploits

Today was the NAMI Southwestern PA Walk. Unfortunately, Team Secret Agent L was mostly sick with that horrible cold/flu thing that's been going around, so only two of us were able to represent: Becky and myself. But two is better than none, right?

It was fun, regardless. Our team was able to contribute $1,761!! And, most importantly, we helped raise awareness and funds for mental illness--an illness that one in four people suffers from. I am always so proud of how many people come out each year to support this very, very important cause. This year there were over 1,000 people at the South Side Works. It was incredible!

I also managed to complete a couple of missions, with Becky's help, of course. So, this post will be not only a recap of today's walk, but also of the two missions we completed.

All in a day's work, and all in the name of kindness.

MISSION: Creativity and Kindness

As a professional actress, I have a real soft-spot for my fellow creative types. I've been thinking lately about how I could maybe use that talent in one of my missions, but I haven't come up with a way yet.

So when Affiliated Agent J of New Jersey contacted me about using one of his very, very unique talents in a mission, I immediately said, "YES!"

The second I found the Secret Agent L site I decided I wanted to be involved in a unique way. Because I am a puppeteer, I decided I would make a short, optimistic puppet video, burn it to a DVD, and leave it somewhere someone would find it.

I decided to leave it on the windshield of a car in a supermarket parking lot. I placed the DVD in plain sight on the windshield, took a couple pictures, and went inside the supermarket to buy a few things. I kept looking at the other people in the store wondering who would find my DVD on their windshield when they got to the parking lot.

When I came back out, the car was gone, and I was glad to see the DVD was too! (I was afraid the DVD would fall off the windshield or that the driver would intentionally leave it behind thinking it was spam.)

My first mission was a success and I can't wait to do another! Thank you Secret Agent L for such a fun experience!

MISSION: I Feel the Need for Speed!

Never did I imagine that the Secret Agent L Project would garner national (and international!) attention like it has over the past couple of months. And I certainly never imagined that I would be approached by individuals wishing to thank me in amazing ways for starting the Project.

When I received a phone call in early September from the 911th Airlift Wing here in Pittsburgh stating that I'd been chosen as a USAF Thunderbirds Hometown Hero, I pinched myself and did a double-take. And then I pinched myself again.

On September 7, 2010, I was honored by being given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly in an F16 with the USAF Thunderbirds. Many of you have seen photos on Facebook, and many of you have read about it on Twitter. As promised, though, I bring you my experience here.

This was, without a doubt, one of the greatest missions of my life. I will never, never forget it, and I will remain indebted for the rest of my life to the amazing men and women of the USAF Thunderbirds who chose me for this honor and to my amazing, amazing pilot, Lt. Col. Derek "Tazz" Routt.

MISSION: F16 Flight

Location: 911th Airlift Wing; Pittsburgh, PA

Objective: Have the ride of my life.

I had to undergo a medical screening by the Thunderbirds' Flight Surgeon, Capt. Thomas Bowden.

I had to sign my life away, basically. But in all honesty, I wasn't scared, despite my fear of flying. I felt calm, but excited. I knew I was in very, very good hands.

My main man Tseng "patchin'" me up. He explained all the patches he was putting on my flight suit.

Before placing the Thunderbirds' patch on my flight suit, he congratulates me for being chosen for the honor of flying with them.

Next up: learning about the G Suit.

I had to learn to put it on by myself. Lots of zippers, snaps, and other...thingies.

Tseng had to literally lace me into it, corset-style, so that it was custom-fit to my physique.

Learning about more gear I'd have to wear. This particular part was on my flight vest.

I had to hook myself into the vest by strapping it around and under my legs. It was very involved.

Helmet time!

The face mask made me feel very claustrophobic.

I had to practice putting my visor up and down.

Pardon my language, but can I just say, "BAD ASS"?

I couldn't believe it, but they put my name on the canopy of the plane. Needless to say, I'll be getting this photo blown up to 11" x 17" and custom-framed.

It's Go Time. I had to suit up on the tarmac, right outside of the plane. I'm mere minutes away from actually climbing into the cockpit. Here I am putting on my G-Suit.

This handsome Thunderbird standing next to me in this photo said he'd never seen anyone suit up as fast as me. *high five*

But I did need a little help getting things snapped up since the suit was custom-fit so tightly. I could hardly bend over to reach the button on the bottom. Thank you, Mr. Thunderbird Handsome Head.

That's right, Mr. Thunderbird Handsome Head. You can help me suit up all you like. And you, Mr. Other Thunderbird Handsome Head watching in the background? I see you.

It's TIME!

Mr. Thunderbird Handsome Head shows me my "sick bags" (i.e. barf bags). Little did I know that those bags would be intimately involved in my flight experience. Ugh.

Who's the man? I mean, woman? ME! Here's me and my AWESOME pilot, "Tazz". Easy, Ladies. Easy. He's married.

Why, yes, that is me in the backseat of the cockpit.

Okay, so, um, here's where a whole bunch of stuff happens that involved the following:

1. Pulling 7 Gs.

2. Going 750 mph (That's faster than Mach 1 for any of you who are keeping track.)

3. Bolting straight up to 18,000-ft at a little over Mach 1.

4. Doing a barrel roll.

5. Flying inverted (that's upside down, folks) several times.

6. Buzzing the Pittsburgh city skyline at rush-hour while only being about 2,500 feet above the ground, while pulling about 6 Gs.

7. Puking.

8. See # 7.

We landed! My legs were so weak that I could hardly feel them as I stepped down the ladder and onto the ground.

I was so glad to be back to zero Gs (which is the force of gravity we're used to each day) that I just had to thank the ground.

"Tazz" gave a really heartfelt speech about me to his colleagues upon our return.


I received an official certificate stating that I had flown with the USAF Tunderbirds in the Lockheed Martin F-16. It included "Tazz's" signature.

I also received a gorgeous framed print of the Thunderbirds flying over Wrigley Field. The print had my name on it and was signed by all of the Thunderbird Officers.

I was given the opportunity to say a few words to everyone after my flight. I was so overcome with emotion that I hardly remember what I said. I do remember, though, that I dedicated the flight to my Pappap, who had served in WWII and had been a POW for nearly three years.

I received a personal thank-you and handshake from every member of the Thunderbirds. I will never forget that.

Receiving a personal thank-you from Colonel Gordon H. Elwell, commander of the 911th Airlift Wing, was a moment I'll never forget. He is one of the nicest, most sincere gentlemen I've ever had the privelige to meet.

All in all, my experience with the USAF Thunderbirds and everyone at the 911th Airlift Wing was one the most remarkable of my life. I hope that I made them proud.

MISSION: PodCamp Pittsburgh w/Secret Agent L

About two weeks ago, I gave a presentation on social media and the kindness movement at PodCamp Pittsburgh. It was my first PodCamp, and let me tell you: It. Was. Incredible. I met the most wonderful people, I learned about social media even more, and I had the wonderful opportunity to tell my story to the public (thanks @Jenana37!!!).

Here's my presentation for your viewing pleasure. It's about 45 minutes long, so get comfy. Also, please note: I had a gorgeous PowerPoint presentation to go along with my talk, and it was all on my own computer, which I brought to the session. Unfortunately, due to some technical glitches, we weren't able to hook my computer up to the main system, so I had to use a different computer (a Mac) to show my presentation. My formatting got all wonky, which made the presentation look pretty bad, but I think it actually was a blessing in disguise because it made for some pretty hilarious moments during my talk. BIG thanks to my friends Norm, Anthony, and Mike for coming to rescue this damsel in technological distress. Smooches, guys.

I am just elated and overjoyed ... my heart hasn't stopped dancing.  I completed my first "official" SAL mission on August 16, 2010, 6:00 p.m., Hilliard, Ohio.

My husband and I brainstormed for ideas to do for a RAK mission.  I thought wouldn't it be awesome if a person going to pick up an item at the library received a random-act-of-kindness.  An unanticipated nicety that enables the "finder" to feel special, to smile, to inspire them to spread kindness to another, to pay it forward.

I placed $5.00 in a card, with an affirmation and personal note from me:  "There is nothing better on a beautiful day then relaxing with a good book on the banks of a river, in a lounge chair, or under a shade tree.  May this Random Act of Kindness make that come true for you, just because!"

The gift was placed inside of a slot where books are waiting to be picked up by those who have reserved items from the library online.

I can't wait to complete my next mission!

MISSION: Lighting a Candle for Kindness in Lima

I've never been further south than Florida. I love warm weather, yes, but I don't have a lot of money, so I can't travel to those warm places as often as I'd like to. One of my colleagues focuses on academic scholarship related to Latin America, and it always sounds so interesting. What could be nicer than lighting a candle on a winter evening?  Yes, we're in winter, the sun is on and off but is almost grey everyday.
 

I left a little one with a short note, asking to light the candle and enjoy the evening, knowing that "the person" is someone special.

One hour later it was still there and by the time I sent you the report, maybe 3 hours later, it was taken. I hope is enlightening someone's night.

I completed another mission today at the supermarket, I need to check if it worked as well. No pictures this time though.

MISSION: Roller Derby Rally for Kindness

I'm a bit of a wimp. And by "a bit of" I actually mean full-fledged. In high school, I played tennis. Not exactly a rough sport. Sure, I've flown in an F16, but I was all suited up and protected. So, when I received this mission from a roller derbyin' gal and Affiliated Agent from Kansas, I thought to myself, "Better her than me!" Luckily, her roughness stays on the roller derby course, because in real life, Affiliated Agent L and her fellow derby-ers are as kind and lovely (and gentle!) as can be.

Affiliated Agent L tells us about the incredible mission she planned for and executed with her fellow roller derby-ers:

So, I was so happy after completing my first mission at work on Monday, that I couldn't wait to complete another one. I wanted to do something bigger, and came up with a plan I knew I couldn't pull off alone. Friday afternoon, I posted this on my Facebook Page:

"The forces of good are formulating a TOP SECRET mission. If you are local, free Sat AM and interested in doing something awesome, message me by 6pm today. I will give you mission details then. (mission is fun and fulfilling- does not entail work...roller girls are encouraged to participate)"

I am a member of the local WFTDA roller derby league. By the end of the day, 6 Roller Girls stepped up to join the mission, committing themselves with no more information than what I had provided. I was ecstatic! I spent a little money gathering some supplies after work and then hurried home to send them their mission details. This is what I sent them:

"Greetings Operative:

Our mission begins tomorrow morning at 10am sharp. We will assemble at Mead"s Corner coffee house (430 East Douglas Avenue) to coordinate, prepare mission supplies, and fuel our bodies for this very important endeavor.

If you happen to have any small gift items around your house that you do not want or need and don't mind getting rid of, bring them. Any item should be something that would bring a smile to a random stranger's face. If nothing comes to mind, and time or money restrictions stop you from procuring a snickers bar or two on your way to meet the rest of the squadron, that is A-OK. Your mission leader will have some supplies at hand. Your presence is what is most imporant.

Sleep well, Operative, more will be revealed tomorrow."

The next morning, I arrived at the coffee shop so excited I could hardly contain myself. Everyone showed up, I explained the premise behind Secret Agent L, and we got to work. Altogether, we wrapped around 30 gifts, with message cards attached. Everyone brought a little something, and the treats ranged from bath gel to jewelry to M&Ms. We had a blast getting everything ready.

Once we were finished, we headed to the local mall. We split up into groups of 2, decided on areas on which to focus,divvied up the gifts and set out. Only one drop was intercepted, when the fitting room attendant caught up to one operative saying, "You left this in the dressing room!" The operative denied that it was hers profusely and confusion ensued. Finally, the operative asked the attendant to read the package and left.

All in all, we had a fantastic time and a very successful operation!

Today's mission included a fresh cut sunflower from the local farmers market. Along with the secret agent card I included a gift certificate for lunch at the facility where the gift was left. It was placed in the women's locker room ( by a female accomplice I must add) and left with a note for whom ever to pick up. The note read, "I've learned you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back."

Had a great time and waiting on the next mission.

MISSION: Niceness at the Naval Academy

If you've been following the Secret Agent L Project for any period of time, you know that I am absolutely in love with our military service members. I mean, I'm more likely to get star-struck at someone in uniform than if Lady Gaga were to walk up to me.

Military service members are absolute celebrities in my eyes.

So today's mission has me all aflutter. I received this mission almost two months ago, and it's high-time I post it. Affiliated Agent JF, a servicewoman in the Navy, thought of her fellow midshipmen and women who might be going through some exhaustion with all the studying they have to do at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. A simple act of kindness. Delicious.

By the way, Affiliated Agent JF is in the process of moving down to Pensacola, Florida, to begin flight school. Affiliated Agent JF takes us along on her mission:

One of the core feelings at the heart of being a midshipman is....exhaustion. Sleepiness. Tiredness. Whether it's from watch the night before or aerodynamics homework, or worrying about the next physical test or military training evolution, mids never get enough sleep. And I found it pretty much stays the same once you graduate...you just get paid more to not sleep. In any case, the Coffee Mess, our coffee shop nestled in the back of the library, is always a bustling place, even at 8 AM in August. So I chose the surrounding library for my first mission. I took a "King Size" Hershey's Dark Chocolate Bar, attached the Secret Agent L card and some pretty silver ribbon, and the following note:

 "This is for you. Yes, YOU! Take a break from your busy day to enjoy a treat. The only catch is, you have to brighten someone else's day with a smile and a kind word. -Affiliated Agent J"

I was a little nervous about being spotted, but I brought my briefcase with me so that I could carry the gift discreetly. I chose a side desk along the windows that look out over the Bay, a favorite study spot in the afternoon and right along the pathway of midshipmen making their way to the coffee bar for a dose of caffiene. I sat down, sipping my coffee and watching until the coast was clear, and then I slipped the chocolate bar out of my bag and left it on the desk. 

I casually stood and walked away, feeling very accomplished that I hadn't been outed on my first trip! I plan on checking back later in the day to make sure that it was found. :)

MISSION: Take a Cupcake

Cupcakes are suddenly all the rage. Here in Pittsburgh, they're a big deal. We have a very famous (and delicious) cupcake shop called Dozen that has a ridiculous fan base--and several locations. I mean, it's a mini cake. How can that be a bad thing?

Affiliated Agent C of Idaho knows a good cupcake when she tastes one, too. And she decided to share the yuminess with a stranger. Especially one who might not be having the greatest day at work.

She tells us about her first mission:

I'm proud to announce that after careful consideration, I accomplished my very first mission. I live in a small town in Idaho and we have a cupcake cafe that is to die for (I attached a picture of some of their cupcakes). If anyone is having a hard day, you will probably find them at this cafe because the cupcakes make you so happy! 

There is also a place of employment in our town that is HORRIBLE to work at! I know, because I used to work there. I was driving past the cupcake cafe and I started thinking about those poor employees having to work at such a wretched place so I decided to buy a gift certificate and leave it where a tired employee of said horrible business could find it. I didn't have time to run home and print off the official "Secret Agent L" business card, but I did mention it in the note on my cupcake stationary that was in the car.

(I would have left an actual cupcake instead of a gift certificate, but I figured I didn't know anyone that would eat unpackaged food left by a stranger...)

I figured out how to maneuver myself undetected to the kiosk where all the employee's have to swipe in, and got read to take a nice picture when people started walking in! I had to quickly snap a pic and then HIDE, so I'm afraid my final picture is blurry.

But I feel GREAT! I honestly couldn't stop smiling the rest of the day thinking about the person who found that card. 

Thanks for the idea to do this! I just may be hooked.

I decided to pick up a five dollar gift certificate to Starbucks because they don't charge for the card.

I was full of excitement when I got home and went about preparing my package to be delivered. 

On my way to the movies I caught the universe giving me a sign that bringing joy to people through acts of generosity was appreciated.

Arriving at the movie theater on a very slow Tuesday night I was able to drop off the package without being discovered and was able to snap a picture before I went to my movie.

When my movie was over I saw that the package had been picked up.  My first mission was a complete success and I can't wait till next time!!!

Mega Mission Monday: Favorite Quote

I'm at my family's house this weekend, preparing it for the arrival of my grandmother when she is released from the hospital on Tuesday. She had a heart procedure the week before last and has had a hard time with her recovery so far. While this isn't my absolute favorite quote, it certainly seemed appropriate for the occasion. I left it on the refrigerator here so that she'll see it when she gets home. She's always been a strong woman in every sense of the word. Hopefully this will remind her of that.

I loved the idea of the mega mission the favorite quotes and so I decided that would be my first mission, although I did not even ordered the SAL business cards yet. Being very active already with full time job, blogging and running with friends a small, but very active German-Croatian cultural association (non-profit, lots of work), I am already super busy and was not sure if I could handle being a good SAL agent doing at least one mission every few weeks.

Anyway .... I gave myself an easy start with this card / quote mission and I LOVED it. 

For this mission I put the SAL link into the card "for more information".

When I heard about the Sunday mega mission of leaving a card with your favorite quote, I knew that would be the launch of my new identity as Secret Agent CK. I had not to think about the quote at all since I am signing all my private emails with my favorite quote for about 10 years now and this quote - lucky enough - fits perfectly to the mission. And here it is:

On Saturday - one day before day x - I went shopping with my girls and bought the card. On late Sunday afternoon I wrote the quote on one site of the card and on the other site I wrote in English and German a short note that this is just a kind message for no special reason and that I wish the stranger, who picks up the card, a happy, healthy and successful new week. I also placed the SAL link at the bottom of the card to make sure that people - if interested - could find out that nobody weird placed the card. German people can be such skeptics.

I attached each quote to a little flower & dropped them off, two at each store. One always was dropped in a dressing room and the second at random spots in the store.  At Target I left one on the price scanner & Sears I left on the employee computer  - I was very stealth, but I think someone saw me do the price scanner at Target, a lady immediately started heading right towards it, I walked away quickly. ;)

Greetings from Sunny So California!

At 2:50pm this afternoon, my 7 y/o daughter and I dropped off this little message of inspiration at a Starbucks in Orange, Calif. I was really stumped as to where to leave it ,so after cruising the local Target and it's parking lot for 1/2 hour to no avail, we ended up at Starbucks. it was 104'-I figured there would be a lot of hot and cranky( very much like the 2 of us) stopping in for a cold drink.

I had a totally different quote I was going to use, but this one popped up this morning, and I knew it was perfect.

Of course while at Starbucks, I picked up a gift card to use in a future RAK.

This was so cool:  all day long I wondered who, where and at what time kind people were out doing their guerrilla kindness! thanks for the chance to be involved!

Laura - this was my first mission, so I did the best I could as I didn't know I'd be such a wreck.   First I put one of my favorite quotes on an index card with some small decorations - and since I didn't know if I was supposed to put the SAL stuff on it, I put a line with only your website on the back and my initial.

It looked like it was going to rain, so I went first to the library to drop of a book and ended up putting the card in the book drop for the librarian or whoever takes the books out to find - then I spotted the security cameras, so hope that was okay and I got the heck out of there.

Then wanted to put one in a shopping cart outside of Publix but there were way too many people.   I can tell it's going to hard to take pictures of where I put stuff unless it's in a private room.

So since I wanted to complete my mission, I put one where the sign-up area is for classes at NutritionSmart, but a lady came over and started to straighten up the table so I snatched it back and just did my shopping. I ended up leaving the card slid in next to the tart cherry juice, which is something Dr. Oz recommends, so I left it there as that's a popular product.

Next I went to Office Depot and left it by the pretty notepads, one that was close to the same color as the index card so a salesman wouldn't notice it right away.

I hope this get easier as I'm sure I looked suspicious. I guess with practice and picking the places it will. I hope one day to be able to get pictures of where I put them. Thanks - and I'm excited to get ready for more!

Hello SAL!

I loves me some quotes, so asking me to pick just one is impossible, so I made three cards.

The first I left tucked behind the button for the walk signal at the corner of Penn and S. Braddock, and the other two were left in the East End Food Coop (today was their annual Art Harvest)--one by the bags for the bulk coffee and the other by some jugs of seasonal apple juice. I wanted to leave them out in the Art Harvest, but it was too hard to find an opportunity to not be seen.

Sorry that the pics aren't that great quality. I was using my phone and trying to not be noticed. :-/ I am, however, happy to report that the card left at the intersection was gone when I walked back home.

Secret Agent L
Location: Aisle 8; Giant Eagle Market District Grocery Store; Pittsburgh, PA

It's impossible for me to pick just one quote.  I mean, I have favorites, but how to pick just one?  I had a card from the fine folks at Quotable, and I felt like the quote on the front held so much possibility in so many ways, so I chose it as my quote.

I had to run to the grocery store tonight to pick up a few things.  The Giant Eagle Market District in my neighborhood (Shadyside) is always packed on Saturdays and Sundays, regardless of the time of day.  Tonight was no exception.  I originally planned on leaving my quote taped to the side of the Red Box DVD machine.  But there was a cop standing near it, along with a line of people all waiting to get their cinematic fixes for the evening.

My plan was foiled.

So, like any good Secret Agent, I moved on to Plan B: the frozen food section.  Aisle 8 was mysteriously empty.

Target acquired.

I stopped in front of the meatless frozen foods (a usual stop for this vegetarian) and quickly stuck my card (which was prepped beforehand with double-sided tape) to the frame.  A couple of quick clicks of the camera and Mission: Complete.

Hi Secret Agent L (Laura!)

So it's done.... my first mission of random kindness.  It felt WONDERFUL!  Before I tell you about my mission I thought I'd share with you a little about me.  I'm a stay-at-home Mom to 2 sweet little ladies (3 years old and 9 months old) and my family is really important to me.  So is being able to teach my girls compassion, empathy and kindness..... so when I was directed to your blog by a friend of mine I knew it was the perfect opportunity for me to not just teach them but to SHOW them how little acts of kindness can not only make you feel good about yourself but more importantly can make someone else feel really great about themselves.

I asked my 3 year old what she would like to find if she were just out and about somewhere one day and her first reply was "ice cream!"  I thought about this for a while because I wanted her to feel connected to the whole process....but how the heck was I going to leave ice cream out to brighten someone's day?!  Then I happened to be reading our local paper and a letter to the editor caught my eye.  It was a new local business women who had written in to voice her concerns about not being allowed to participate in our community's annual bash held downtown along the main street because her business was located outside the parameters of the downtown core.  She was upset because she felt like as a new business here in Orangeville the town should try to help promote rather then shut out like that.  What is her business you ask?  She operates an ice cream store!  A light bulb went off in my brain and I knew exactly what I was going to do!  Not only was I going to brighten someone's day with a tasty treat I was also going to help promote a small business women's company right in our own hometown.... perfect!

I have had an ice cream cone from her store before and it was very yummy.  Her business is called "I Scream for Ice Cream" and part of the reason that her ice cream is so delicious is because she actually makes all of her ice cream right in the store fresh every day!  

So here is my mission:

I went and bought 5 gift cards from "I Scream for Ice Cream", each one good for one free kiddie cone of your choice of flavour (a $2 value per cone).  Then I stopped at a mom's favourite store for a mission on a budget...the Dollar Store. 

I bought some pink and green ribbon to help dress them up.  I had some blank note cards at home that were perfect....a green border with a nice pink flower at the top....it's like they were made just for SAL. :)  

I wrote out a little note on each, placed a gift card with each one and attached your calling card to the outside of each envelope with the ribbon. 

I told my 3 year old that we were going on a secret mission that day and she insisted on wearing her super hero leggings (as she calls them)  I think she is under the impression that secret missions are only carried out by super heroes.... I love how their minds work at this age.  I snapped a picture of her leggings before we got into the truck....

I wanted to drop my gifts off at stores that I know other moms shop at a lot so I picked (surprise, surprise) our local grocery store (Sobey's) and our local dollar store (The Dollar Store).  I spend a LOT of time in both of these locations....so much so that some of the employees will say hi to us by name.  What can I say.... the life of a stay-at-home mom can get pretty lonely so I like to spread our errand running out throughout the entire week. :) 

I dropped 4 cards off on random shelves in the grocery store, sticking to the product sections that I knew other Mom's (or parents in general) would be browsing or at the eye height of smaller children.  I took pictures with my cell phone after each drop (except for one of the grocery store ones....I almost got caught leaving the card on the shelf and had to pretend to be looking for something else on a different shelf...)  I found out that it's also hard to try to blend in when you have a 3 year old following you around asking you where you are going to leave the treats for people, lol!

I was not able to witness any of the gifts being picked up but I did have to go back to each store later that night because in my excitement of the mission I forgot to grab something that I needed from both locations and they had all been picked up!

All in all it was a pulse racing, heart filling adventure and I hope to continue spreading random acts of kindness in our community with my little "super hero" helpers!

MISSION: Rest and Unwind

Several years ago, I found a lump in my breast. It was pretty scary. I had ultrasounds and doctor exams, all of which told me it was a cyst. But after an excisional biopsy was done, it turned out to be an atypical papilloma. It was benign, thank goodness, but it's since increased my risk for breast cancer by five times. I see an oncologist now twice a year, and let me tell you: waiting in the waiting room for those appointments makes me tense and anxious.

Affiliated Agent KR from Florida is such a kind soul, because she knows all too well the tension associated with waiting around in medical facilities. Her mission reflects that kindness, and I'm delighted to share it with you all here.

This was my first mission. YAY! A few years ago, when my mother was in intensive care, I remember spending hours in the lobby ,along with other anxious people, worrying about my mother and watching tired doctors and nurses run up and down hallways.  I know what it feels like to wait in a lobby for hours before visiting a loved one so I decided that I would spread some cheer in a hospital lobby. 

After picking my target I visited my local craft store. I had so much fun picking out the notecard, magnets, chocolate and matching box and ribbon.

I took the goodies home and assembled them into a neat package.

I decided to write a message about relaxing.  It's easy to lose sight of one's needs when a loved one is ill. 

The next day, I went to the hospital and decided to leave the package in the third floor lobby bathroom. The lobby is close to the neonatal unit and the labor and delivery ward.

I hope that whoever found the  package enjoyed it.  They deserve it. 

I'm sure they did, Affiliated Agent KR. I'm sure they did.

MISSION: Notebooks and Niceness in the U.K.

I used to live in London. Years ago, of course. In the East End. Right on Mile End Road. I studied at Queen Mary College, which is part of the University of London. It was part of my study abroad experience. I even got to act at the Harold Pinter Studio Theatre. It was an amazing experience!

So when I got Affiliated Agent W's mission, I felt a twinge of homesickness. Hopefully someday I'll get back to my old stomping grounds. Any British Affiliated Agents want a house guest for a bit?

Had a big mission today! As a lover of stationery I decided to distribute notebooks and pencils to help people dream!

The dream books were packaged with Secret Agent L cards and details, plus a note telling the finder that this was a dream book in which to write their hopes and dreams.

Pre-mission - all the notebooks and pencils were laid out ready to go.

I decided to leave the notebooks in my local park where I knew lots of people would pass by and, hopefully, find them.  I set out early so that I could do the drops without being noticed.

The first notebook was left on a wall in a secluded part of the park and should be fairly easy to find.

The second notebook was hidden between the branches of a tree a little further down the path.

I took a detour down towards a more densely wooded area and perched a notebook in the "v" of a lovely tree.  Across the pond I could see two dog walkers but I don't think they saw me!

I found another great tree with a fabulous hiding place and popped another notebook in the tree.

At this point I was nearly spotted and had to quickly photograph the next notebook and move away without being seen.

The next notebook was left in a slightly more visible spot perched between a tree and some fencing.

The next drop had to be abandoned as a dog walker in the distance turned round and caught sight of me.  I pretended to be studying trees to put him off the scent and once he had moved on I placed the next notebook on a bench.

I didn't want to make the notebooks too easy to find so I went a little off the beaten track and hid a package on a friendly tree.

As tradition dictates a notebook was left in the ladies' loos!

Then on to a favourite part of the woods where only the intrepid and observant will find the next few drops.

This one looks obvious but it's concealed up a slight incline, very near the old swimming pool.

And that was the last one.  All dropped without being observed, I believe.  A successful mission and a smile on my face!

Know what I had for lunch today? Subway. I love Subway. There's a shop right on our campus where I work, so I frequent the joint quite a bit. I'm a creature of habit: toasted flat bread veggie delight sandwich. Nom nom nom!

I am so happy to be an Affiliate Agent. I had my first experience this weekend.

I put a $5 gift certificate to Subway in a greeting card along with the Secret Agent business card.

On the outside of the envelope was written "Yes! This is for you. Open it and have a great day". My pictures will show the Subway where I purchase a $5 gift card, the greeting card, what I put on the envelope, what I wrote inside the card, and where I left it.

As you know, I live in the Metropolitan New Orleans area. I am about 40 miles from a Tanger Outlet Mall. I left the card on the counter of a Bath and Body Works in that mall. The pictures show where I left it and also shows someone checking out and not noticing the card.

This made me feel wonderful and I hope that whoever found it feels as good knowing that someone to pass a little kindness their way.

Today, August 16, 2010, I left a Greeting Card, a Subway Gift Certificate and a Bath and Body Works very small hand lotion on the desk of the Clerk's Office in my building.

I wanted a specific person to get it, so I put it all in a bag and just wrote her name on it. I left it on the counter while no one was watching. I am sure she got it, but don't know her reaction. I really wanted to do something nice for her. The pictures labeled SAL-8, SAL-9, SAL-10 and SAL-11 are what I sent to her. I was not able to get a picture of where I left the package since it was during work hours and then everyone would know who left it.

Thank you so much for including me as an Affiliate Agent. I will let you know when I complete my next mission. I can't tell you how excited I am.

I completed my first mission today! I spent the last couple of days thinking about what I wanted to do and where I'd want to do it. Yesterday, while hitting my routing morning spot (Panera Bread) for my coffee, I was thinking about how I really need to stop stopping for coffee every morning (I'd save a lot of money!), but how I really enjoy my little stop, how its something just for me, not for my husband or my kids, its my 5 minutes alone time before I rush off to work. That's when I decided to get a few $5 gift cards so that others might get to enjoy that 5 minutes of alone time to get a great cup of coffee.

So I rushed home and printed out the business cards and found a cute note card to pen my first mission's note. I got a little side tracked because I was also going through my mail, which included a Kohl's advertisement for a big sale that started today. Panera coffee is but one of my vices, shopping at Kohl's is yet another.....Oh! The light went off, I'll hit the sale and get to surprise someone with a RAK while I shop!

Today after work, I rushed to Kohl's armed with my little package. But where to do it? First day of a big sale (their semi-annual handbag and shoe sale!), so lots of people in the parking lot, so I didn't want to pick out a car. Even the benches out front and in the foyer had people on them, so those were out too. I figured I'd be inspired once inside. I started shopping and (again) got side tracked when I hit the shoe department, because if there is one thing I'd give up Panera coffee for, it's shoes (I own about 60 pair, it’s a sickness, yes, but an oh so stylish one!).

While trying on a cute pair of flats, it dawned on me that the shoe dept would make a great place for my first mission, since it was all of my favorites rolled into one! So I took out a box of the same shoes I was trying on, just in a different size, and slid the envelope on top of the shoes! I hope that whoever tries on those shoes next enjoys their 5 minutes of coffee heaven while wearing their new shoes!

Well done, Affiliated Agent N! And creative, too! I'd LOVE to be the gal that found the perfect shoes AND a cup of coffee to go with them!

MISSION: Aircraft and Awesomeness

I'm on day 3 in Chicopee, flying out of Westover ARB, MA. Today was a rather cloudy, cool day, which for a naturally born and raised New Yorker brings wonderful memories of my childhood.

After completing a mission and having a drink with the aircrew, I decided to drop my "kindness package." I made my way over to the Big Y grocery store, next to the Hampton Inn that I was staying at and couldn't decide how to make my drop. It wouldn't have been good to do it outside because of the drizzling rain.

I then remembered another agent who slipped their package into one of the grocery carts.

Since many of the carts were outside, I placed mine into a basket, quickly snapped a picture and left.

Too bad we're not allowed to take the "getaway vehicle" until Friday when our temporary duty to Westover ARB ends.

Being an Aunt to nine children and a nanny to many others I wanted to come up with something child related for my mission.

As I was using a public restroom one day it hit me! I decided to leave a little something for a mom (or female caregiver) at the restroom changing table. I chose Target because it is one of my favorite stores and one that I always seem to be at.

I thought that someone taking care of a child in diapers would appreciate some coupons for diapers and wipes.

I also included a $5 Target gift card. Having a child in diapers can be expensive and hopefully this will ease the burden, somewhat, of paying for them.

I snuck into the ladies room and I was lucky enough to be alone. I was very nervous because the changing table is right next to the restroom door. After I left my package I put the changing table back in the upright position. I can't wait for someone to find it!!

As I was leaving I couldn't help but smile. It's such a good feeling!

On my way through the parking lot I encountered a STOP sign. I thought, "We should all STOP and spread a little kindness."

Hello Laura, AKA Secret Agent L. Today was my first mission - I felt totally like a kid again which is pretty exciting when you are 59 years young.

I created my little boxes from card stock and filled them with a potpourri sachet of roses, a shell and a penny.

I wrapped it with ribbon and raffia and put a little paper under it with the saying:

A Shell for Travel, Envision the Ocean. A Penny for Luck, May it Double Each Day. A Scent of Rose forever Enchanting, Found Treasures to Brighten Your Day.

Then I put my tag on it that says "this is for you" and set it in place with your card.

I took two parcels with me to Wal-Mart today and placed one at the blood pressure seat. The other I planted in a woman's stall. Almost forgot to leave your card with it as the door opened and another person came in. Snapped a fuzzy pic and hightailed out out. Later I saw this lady with her elderly mother and a daughter leaving the store, and she had the gift in her hand holding it like a delicate bird. It really put a smile on my face! I wonder if she put two and two together as we smiled at each other as we passed in the restroom.

I am grateful for the bright light feelings this little mission has given me.

Going to the Dr is never fun. But needing a hematologist, oncologist, or neurologist, must be very difficult. So for today’s RAK, I set my sights on people going to one of those offices. I don’t know whether my gift will be found by a an ill person, a well person, someone acting as a support system, or an employee of the office, but regardless of their situation, they are definitively among the most deserving of a bit of cheer on a Friday afternoon.

I picked up 3 beautiful bouquets of flowers, and headed to a local Oncologist/ Hematologist/ Neurologist office.

I left one bouquet on a car in a handicapped parking spot, one in the ladies room, and one on the floor right near the entrance to their office.

I am happy that I was able to bring a smile to someone today.

And I would like everyone to remember, when you have your health you have everything.

MISSION: Park and Pay

If you live in a city, you know how hard it can be to find parking. And you also know how ridiculously expensive it is. Pittsburgh doesn't have the best public transit, so most people use cars to get around. And those cars have to be parked somewhere, right? I always feel bad as a result of the amount of money we have to pay just to put our cars somewhere. And those payments can really add up!

Affiliated Agent J in Seattle has had her fair share of parking payments. And she decided to help out another driver with his/her payment for the day!

This was my first mission and I was so excited to do it! Last year I was diagnosed with cancer and have had several surgeries related to that. Because of that, I wanted to do something at the hospital where I had received my care. My latest reconstructive surgery was scheduled for September, 7th, 2010, which just happened to be my thirty-fourth birthday as well. What a better time to do a random act of kindness for someone else. Planning this mission helped keep my mind off the surgery and my nerves to a minimum. After a lot of thinking, I decided to leave parking money on a car in the garage. Who knows how much I have spent in parking up there in the last year, and figured maybe someone else could benefit from a little parking break too! I had a great time writing the card and wondering who would be reading it.

When I arrived at the University of Washington Medical Center at 1:15p, I looked around the parking garage for the perfect car. I chose one that looked like it had been there awhile. There were blankets and pillows in the back seat. I'm hoping I chose wisely!

As I went into the hospital and checked in for my surgery, the excitement of the mission put me completely at ease. Surgery went well, and yes, I am currently in remission! This will certainly be a new birthday tradition...well, minus the surgery!

Affiliated Agent J! There are SO many reasons to celebrate this mission:

3. You're a cancer survivor! YAY!!!!

4. You opened your heart to someone else who is spending time at the hospital. No matter why they're there, you chose wisely, simply because you extended kindness.

Today I completed my first mission as a Secret Agent L Affiliate Agent. It wasn't anything big, but I basically bought a local newspaper (Tallahassee Democrat) and placed a note on the newspaper that read "Enjoy a paper on me! Have a wonderful day!" and attached the Secret Agent L card to it. I placed the newspaper on top (well, kind of on the side) of the machine. I went by a few hours later on my lunch break and the paper was gone...which made me feel good.

It was a small mission, but I was imagining how I would feel if I had walked up and seen that...I would have thought that was nice of someone to do, so that's why I chose this as my first mission. I would like to thank you again for this experience. It's something everyone should think to do just because...but sometimes it takes seeing someone else do it to give us a little push. I have attached a couple pictures for you to see.

This was fun!

For as long as I can remember, I've studied religion. Not just one, but all major religions and several "minor" religions. I'm intrigued by the beliefs that hold people tight, the words that shape the lives of families, and the rituals followed on a daily basis. I grew up in a family that didn't have religion so as a youngster, I was not able to experience something so amazing as belief to keep with me. I wasn't raised in a culture that stressed spirituality. In a way, I think this allowed me to be more open, more accepting, more tolerant to many different religions and those who study them. I love to see the interactions of those who truly love to serve. It matters not their background, I think, as long as giving, kindness, and love are motivating forces.

Today, this country remembers a terrible tragedy. I will not speculate on the reasons why. I will only say that we should find strength in hope, love, togetherness, and faith. Regardless of our affiliations, we are all still one, we are humans who all deserve to be treated with dignity. And I do believe that dignity is not dependent on affiliations, no matter the type.

My mission today was a handwritten note dedicated to the members of the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh.

I also included a few decorative doilies with words of LOVE written on them.

As difficult as today is for many, I imagine that those who attend services at the Center may have a tough day as well.

I want those attending the Center to know that for so many of us, love is the only answer. And that means Be Kind, No Exceptions.

At this point in my life, I found a faith, a spiritual path to guide me in my everyday interactions. I am blessed to have a guiding force that gives me the strength and courage needed to simply make it through some days. When I need extra strength, I look to my family, my friends, and my beloved Pittsburgh community, every single member.

One of my favorite things about the Secret Agent L Project is the way it seems to have brought the world together. Literally. Receiving emails and missions from people from every corner of the globe (Australia, Canada, Japan, Mongolia...) has just proved to me that we are all so much more connected--and so much more alike--than I think we want to admit or believe.

And I love that.

So when I received this mission in my inbox last night, I knew I had to post it right away. We really do belong to one another, no matter the distance or the language or the culture. And that gives me hope that someday we will all live in peace.
